It is not a baseless fear. In 1970, Apollo 13 was launched at 13:13 hours and scheduled to land on th emoon's Fra Mauro highlands on April 13. The digits of the 4-1-70 launch date add up to 13 and the rocket took off from launch pad 39, three times 13. These arrangements were made specifically to disprove the superstition. Two of the ship's oxygen tanks exploded during the journey!! Sometime in the 1800s, Britain tried to debunk the Friday fear by commissioning a special ship named HMS Friday. Its keel was laid on a Friday, its crew was chosen on a friday, its captain was Jim Friday, and it was launched on Friday. It went out to sea---and was never seen again!! IN the Christian tradition, Friday was supposedly the day that: Adam and Eve bit into the forbidden fruit, Cain killed Abel, the Great Flood begun, Solomon's temple fell, and Christ was crucified. The guests at the Last Supper numbered, you guessed it, 13...... Just why is 13 an unlucky number?
